Open Mixing Mills

A mill configured around your compound and production line. Counter-rotating rolls work the material and prepare it for sheeting or the next process stage. Performance depends on the balance of drive, gap, temperature and stock handling; process requirements therefore lead to a clearly defined technical and commercial scope.

Selection & project considerations

Rolls and working surfaces

Roll construction, material and finish are selected around the compound, temperature, wear and cleaning requirements. Customization alternatives include forged steel or chilled cast iron and polished or chrome-plated surfaces, according to the agreed design.

Temperature and cooling

Peripheral cooling passages, separate water circuits, rotary unions and compound-temperature monitoring can be specified. Where heating is needed, the suitability of a liquid medium or electric heating and a temperature-control unit is established for the application.

Drive, speed and friction ratio

Review a single drive or independent roll drives, gear reducers, variable-frequency control and shaft transmission. A dedicated hydraulic-drive configuration can also be assessed. Speed, torque and friction ratio are defined from the material and duty cycle.

Roll-gap adjustment

Define manual, electromechanical or hydraulic gap adjustment, with digital position feedback and recipe settings where specified. Adjustment under load and emergency opening require a coordinated mechanical, control and safety design.

Stock guidance and recirculation

Options include adjustable stock guides, hydraulic guide movement, an overhead stock blender or automated recirculation arms. Selection depends on material behavior, working width and feeding method; these are configuration alternatives rather than mandatory equipment on every mill.

Bearings, lubrication and maintenance

Review bearings, service points, centralized or automatic lubrication and access to connections and wear parts. The layout must allow drive servicing, tray cleaning and component replacement.

Controls and process records

Specify PLC/HMI controls, recipes, access levels, alarms and batch records for temperature, speed and gap according to installed sensors. Remote monitoring, factory-data interfaces, cloud connectivity and analytics form a separately defined, secured integration scope.

Safety within the design

Safety starts with the risk assessment and intended use: access to nip points, emergency stops, braking, guards, interlocks and prevention of unintended restart. Destination-market requirements, conformity documentation and inspection are defined for each machine before handover. Applicability of EN 1417:2023 for two-roll-mill safety is reviewed within the project requirements.

Feeding and sheet discharge

Assess batch handling, feeding from a mixer or conveyor, sheet guidance, cutting, take-off and connection to cooling equipment. Transfer heights, flow direction and interlocks with adjacent equipment are defined in the line layout.

Available roll sizes

Reference sizes for mill configurations, with manufacturing to customer requirements. Effective working length, batch capacity, power and machine envelope are confirmed in the technical proposal.

Roll construction and transmission

Forged AISI 4140 steel rolls with hard-chrome surfaces, peripheral cooling, rolling bearings and automatic lubrication. The configuration includes hydraulically positioned PA66 stock guides and independent roll control through two motors, two reducers and two variable-frequency drives.

Gap opening up to 50 mm

The referenced shaft-transmission configuration permits a roll opening up to 50 mm. This is a roll-opening value, not a guaranteed sheet thickness; operating and opening ranges are confirmed for the requested configuration in the proposal.

A proposal that defines delivery

The quotation identifies equipment, accessories, services, exclusions, currency, payment terms and price validity. Lead time is defined from scope approval and fulfillment of project-start requirements.

From inspection to operation

Agree factory acceptance (FAT), site acceptance (SAT) where included, material trials and training. Shipping, insurance, customs, lifting, installation, utilities and trade delivery terms are allocated in the quotation.

Support through operation

Discuss critical and wear spares, maintenance planning, remote support and site visits. Warranty duration, commencement, conditions and out-of-scope service costs are documented so comparisons consider ownership cost as well as purchase price.

Can the mill be built around our requirements?

Yes. Configuration starts with the material, batch, required output and available utilities. Options are reviewed together for compatibility before the proposal and manufacturing scope are approved.

How does overhead equipment change the configuration?

An overhead recirculation assembly adds a material-handling path above the rolls. Its selection, or an arm-based alternative, depends on the compound, operation and space. The machines shown need not share the same configuration.

How are capacity and price established?

Capacity depends on compound behavior, batch mass, cycle time and required temperature, not roll diameter alone. Price varies with drives, controls, equipment, supply scope, services and shipping destination.

Can our material be evaluated before handover?

A material trial or acceptance protocol can be agreed during project definition or acceptance testing. Sample quantity, supply responsibility, result criteria, attendance and costs are specified in the proposal.

What is included in installation and warranty?

The proposal defines installation supervision, commissioning, training, spares, warranty duration, conditions and exclusions. It also identifies site preparation, lifting, connection and utility responsibilities.

Does digital connectivity include remote control?

Monitoring and data collection are separate from machine operation. Connectivity, control permissions, security and interlocks must be defined in the project; remote operation or bypassing safety functions is not assumed.
